The Agency for Business Competitiveness (ACCIÓ) has granted Industrial Leridana del Frío SLU (Ilerfred), Ilerdagua SL, and the Institute of Agri-food Research and Technology (IRTA) a Green R&D project focused on climate change. This project, named PROTECH, represents a significant advancement in technology for the preservation of horticultural species, aiming to reduce food waste and improve the resilience of agri-food products.
The PROTECH project seeks to assess the efficiency of an innovative pre-cooling process to extend the shelf life of fruits, reduce postharvest losses, and preserve the quality of horticultural products. This technological breakthrough has a direct impact on improving the agri-food supply chain, allowing for better resource management and optimizing the preservation process.
One of the key aspects of PROTECH is its focus on sustainability, particularly in the optimization of water usage, an essential and increasingly scarce resource in the agri-food sector. The efficient use of this resource not only helps reduce environmental impact but also contributes to greater competitiveness and economic sustainability for horticultural producers and distributors.
The success of this project lies in the close collaboration between companies and research entities such as Ilerfred, Ilerdagua, and IRTA. These types of strategic alliances between the private sector and research institutions are crucial for fostering innovation in the agri-food sector and developing technological solutions that address the current challenges of climate change and food security.
The joint efforts of Ilerfred, Ilerdagua, and IRTA not only enable the creation of more effective and efficient solutions but also ensure the transfer of knowledge that benefits the entire agri-food sector. This collaboration opens up new possibilities for implementing technologies that are not only cost-effective but also sustainable in the long term.
