Postharvest stem bending or stem curvature in cut gerbera flower (Gerbera?jamesonii) causes a substantial loss of gerbera marketability after harvest as a result of low stem lignification and stem strength. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of pulse treatment of salicylic acid (SA) at 0, 75 and 150 ?M on postharvest lignifying enzyme activities (phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) and peroxidase (POD)), stem lignification and stem bending disorder of two gerbera cultivars with low (?Aqua?) and high (?Beaudine?) stem bending scores. Flower vase life, enzyme activities and stem lignification were significantly affected?by cultivar, SA concentration and their interaction effects; so that in compared with control (without SA application), SA at 150 ?M showed the highest enzyme activities and lowest stem bending. Also, the highest PAL and POD activities and stem lignification and the lowest stem bending under SA treatment (150 ?M), were observed in ?Aqua? as a resistant cultivar to stem bending, which were about 1.47 and 1.52 times higher than control (without SA treatment), respectively. Also, compared with control, PAL and POD activities in ?Beaudine? cultivar were about 4 and 1.2 times higher at 150 SA ?M treatments, respectively. These results suggest that application of SA in preservative solutions of cut gerberas led to decreasing of stem bending and gerbera postharvest losses.
