FELIX INSTRUMENTS ? Reducing food waste and increasing marketable yields

The Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. FELIX INSTRUMENTS is a company focused on pre- and postharvest applications for the produce industry through instruments to help fresh market professionals to maximize the value of their products with our line of portable Gas Analyzers and NIR Produce Quality Meter. Near Infrared Measurement allows to evaluate the quality of fruits and vegetables in a non destructive way.The parent company, CID Bio-Science, provide a range of portable plant science tools to obtain the maximum yields. Sustainability is at the core of Felix Instruments’ mission, in that every tool we make is designed to eliminate food waste and improve efficiency at the production level.  In keeping with this theme, our building is a historically-landmarked building in Camas, WA, which we renovated in 2012. In 2019, we installed solar panels on our building’s roof, which provide for much of our electricity use. Additionally, we actively attempt to reduce paper use by working digitally wherever possible.” The search for new solutions is cointinuous by Felix Instruments. Current R&D Projects are the development of the following instruments:- F-760 Spectrometer for Liquids. Currently in the design phase, this new instrument is being developed with a focus on Wine and Olive Oil products and have a higher spectra range than any of their current instruments! - 710 Leaf Spectrometer.This re-design of their current product on the CID Bio-Science side will combine multiple commonly-used tools into one, portable instrument. - 751 Apple Quality Meter. They’re currently working with researchers to develop an apple-focused Quality Meter - F-751 Cherry Quality Meter. They’re currently working with researchers to develop a cherry-focused Quality Meter.  Contributions to the Sustainable Development GoalsThe reduction of waste allowed by FELIX INSTRUMENTS due (1) a better estimation of the appropriate harvest time, (2) better organoleptic quality of the harvested foods due a more accurate harvest time (customer will enjoy eating a ripe fruit), and (3) non destructive quality evaluations. It constitutes a contribution to more availability of food, contributing to the Goal 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals, Zero hunger. “The food and agriculture sector offers key solutions for development, and is central for hunger and poverty eradication. Research and Development projects contribute to the Goal 9, Industry, innovation, and infrastructure - Investments in infrastructure are crucial to achieving sustainable development. The update of the buildings to more sustainable energy sources, reduce of paper use, etc. focud directly on Goal 12, Responsible consumption and production - Responsible Production and Consumption.
