HyperBioCoat?is a project coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute ISC, which will develop new biobased and biodegradable coating for all kind of plastic packaging. It has received funding from the Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking under the European Union?s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 720736.? This new bio-based coating will increase the product?s shelf life and contribute to a reduction of CO2 emissions, as all the precursors needed for lacquer synthesis will be based on renewable materials. Project results will be tested in three real application cases, food, cosmetic and medical. In the case of food, the focus is food tray and other flexible packaging where product shelf life will be increased. Advantages of the coating include 10% cost reduction, by utilising side-streams of existing commercial processes supports cost-competitiveness, and 20% CO2 less emissions, by replacing fossil-based precursor materials with biobased starting materials, it can be estimated that the CO2 emissions will be reduced at least by 20 % for bioORMOCER?s as compared to purely fossil-based. The coordinator testimony, Dr. Stefan Hanstein, Fraunhofer ISC, indicates ?the challenge of this project is to impart superior barrier properties to biodegradable packaging materials. This innovation will be carried out by combining the high-performance ORMOCER? concept with oligomeric hemicellulose feedstock. The result will have an impact on the demand of the packaging industry for biodegradable and bio-based packaging materials?.
