Prochloraz, the best control to fungal growth that induces longkong drop due ethylene production

Abscission is a significant problem in longkong fruit after harvesting. Recent reports show that using of calcium chloride, 1-MCP or NAA reduces fruit drop, indicating ethylene involvement in longkong fruit abscission. Fungicides were found to give good fungal control and reduce fruit drop in longkong. This suggests that postharvest abscission in longkong is due to ethylene production induced by fungal growth on the fruit. An experiment was conducted this involved dipping longkongs into fungicides with different modes of action, i.e.

Abscission is a significant problem in longkong, Aglaia dookoo, fruit after harvesting. An experiment was conducted this involved dipping longkongs into fungicides with different modes of action, i.e. carbendazim, prochloraz, mancozeb and difenoconazole solutions at 500 and 1000 mgL-1 for 3 minutes then stored at 25?1 C. The results showed that fruit rot and total fruit drop were reduced in association with increasing fungicide concentrations and decreasing ethylene production, prochloraz gave the best of result. When ethylene production was determined in 'Fuji' apple and wax gourd slices, which had been dipped in 500 mgL-1?carbendazim, prochloraz, mancozeb and difenoconazole solutions for 1 minute and rinsed with water, it was found that only prochloraz reduced ethylene production in both fruits. The results indicate that the main cause of longkong abscission is the fungal growth that stimulates ethylene production, resulting in fruit abscission.Hence, it is suggested that to prevent longkong fruit drop pre- and postharvest fungal control is essential. Prochloraz gave the best fruit rot and fruit drop control because of its ability to control fungal growth and to reduce ethylene production in longkong.SourcesPOSTHARVEST ABSCISSION IN LONGKONG (AGLAIA DOOKOO GRIFF.)
