CA and MA storage are widely used to maintain quality of fruits and vegetables, while physiological responses of ornamental plants to high CO2 are poorly characterized. The present research investigated the effects of short-term high concentration of CO2 under pre-cooling temperature (5?C) to extend the vase life of cut carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) ?Light Pink Barbara?, ?Boundee? and ?Pink Montezuma? and Cattleya (C. Alma Neilson ? C. Bob White) Z-1294c flowers.Treatment with 20% CO2 at 5?C for 12 h reduced ethylene production (from 14.8 to 4.2 nL?g-1?h-1) and significantly extended the vase life of cut carnation ?Light Pink Barbara? but did not in ?Boundee?. In cut carnation ?Pink Montezuma? and Cattleya flowers, treatments of 50% CO2 at 5?C for 12 h and 24 h reduced ethylene production and respiration of flowers, and prolonged their vase life from 6 to 8 days and 7 to 12 days, respectively. Treatment with 50% CO2 at room temperature (23?C) for 24 h induced disorder symptoms, i.e., sepal necrosis. However, these symptoms can be suppressed under 5?C during the treatment. Our results demonstrated that application of short-term high CO2 could be a potential method for treating cut flowers in order to delay senescence, maintain quality and prolong the vase life, but the effects varied with CO2 level, duration, temperature and plant materials.SourcesSHORT-TERM HIGH CARBON DIOXIDE TREATMENTS UNDER PRE-COOLING TEMPERATURE EXTEND THE VASE LIFE OF CUT FLOWERSBurana, C12, Kurokura, T2, Yamane, K2yamane@cc.utsunomiya-u.ac.jp1Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Tokyo, Japan2Utsunomiya University, Tochigi, JapanIHC 2014, International Horticulture Congress, 17-22 August 2014, Brisbane, http://www.ihc2014.org/Picture by www.vectorstock.com Key wordsPoscosecha?? ?postcosecha?? ?postharvest?? ?na-oes?? ??? ??? ???????? ????? ??? ?post-r?colte?? ????? ?? ??????????? ??? ?na-oogst?? ?post-raccolta?? ?Obr?bka po?? ?p?s-colheita?? ????????????????? ?hasat sonras??? ??? ?Ernte?? ????????????????? ????? ????????????? ?postcollita?? ?poskliz?ov頠 ????? ??? ??? ??? ?nakon branja?? ?pozberov頠 ??? ?obdelovanje zemlje po?? ?post-colleita?? ?????? ??????? ?pascapanen?? ??il?onn postharvest?? ??????? ?p?c ra?as?? ?derliaus apdirbimas po?? ?lepas tuai?? ??? ?? ???????? ?post-recoltare?? ??????? ??????? ???????????????????? ?????????????? ?????????????????? ?sau thu ho?ch?? ?????????????????? ?zangemva kwenkathi yokuvuna?? ??? ?
