Catalytic Generators refers to a 2012 study commissioned by the Pear Bureau Northwest to gauge the effectiveness of conditioned pears at retail. According to information from the Nielsen Perishables Group, the 12-week study showed that pear sales grew almost 20% compared to stores without a conditioned pear program, according to a Catalytic Generators’ news release. The Pear Bureau Northwest identifies conditioned pears as those “just starting to ripen”, according to the release. “We see a lot of upside for conditioned pears, especially red and green anjous,” Kevin Moffitt, pear bureau president and CEO, said in the release. “We have been telling retailers that a ripe anjou is the new pear variety!” Dennis Kihlstadius, CEO of Produce Technical Services and an expert on fruit ripening who has worked with pear groups, said the practice of conditioning pears began in the mid-1990s as shippers saw the success of banana ripening. Moffitt said in the release that the pear group has been promoting conditioned pear programs in stores since then, and there are 49 retailers in the U.S. and Canada who carry conditioned pears. “Gone are the days where shoppers picked up a pear at the local grocery store and found the fruit as hard as a rock,” Greg Akins, president and CEO of Catalytic Generators, said in the release. “Nowadays, customers expect uniformly ripe, ready to eat pears, and that’s what our ethylene generators help to provide.” SourceThe Packer, Chris Koger, Catalytic Generatos promotes conditioned pears at retail
