With the increasing emphasis on "field to table" traceability for all items of fresh produce, Infia srl has developed an inkjet applied coding system which allows every punnet of fruit, particularly soft fruit such as strawberries and raspberries, to be traced back to the packer, the grower or the field where the fruit was picked, anywhere in the world. The idea has been successfully trialled in France, Spain and Italy during the 2000/2001 seasons involving tens of millions of punnets. How It WorksTo each carton of punnets is allocated its own particular number. This unique number also appears on the base of every punnet in that carton. Each grower or packer is provided with a specific number or botton. Duplication of numbers is impossible and correlation of the carton and punnet numbers is carefully controlled and monitored during Infia's fully automated production process. Distribution of cartons is recorded using specially developed scanning software allowing standardized checking and recording along the complete supply chain (this customized software is freeware and available for all customers).
