Vase solutions that could replace the commercial formulations for two Dendrobium varieties

The aim of this study was to determine how the concentration of aluminum sulphate (Al2(SO4)3), 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate (8-HQS) and sucrose as a vase solution compared with a commercial vase solution.

The aim of this study was to determine how the concentration of aluminum sulphate (Al2(SO4)3), 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate (8-HQS) and sucrose as a vase solution compared with a commercial vase solution. The vase life, water uptake and bud opening of Dendrobium Sonia ?Eia Sakul? and Dendrobium ?Burana Jade? were studied. The 100 mg/L Al2(SO4)3 plus 2% sucrose showed the longest vase life for Dendrobium Sonia ?Eia Sakul?, whereas distilled water plus 2% sucrose was the best vase solution for Dendrobium ?Burana Jade?. In addition, various concentrations of 8-HQS were tested. The combination of Al2(SO4)3, 8-HQS and sucrose were compared with two commercial vase solutions (Chrysal AVB 1 ml/L + Chrysal AVB Booster 0.5 ml/L, or Chrysal Clear Professional 2 SW 5 ml/L). The combination of 100 mg/L Al2(SO4)3 with 150 mg/L 8-HQS and 2% sucrose exhibited longer vase life of Sonia ?Eia Sakul? than control, but showed the same vase life as a commercial vase solution. ?Burana Jade? showed the longest vase life in distilled water plus 150 mg/L 8-HQS and 2% sucrose. In conclusion, the vase solution containing 100 mg/L Al2(SO4)3, 150 mg/L 8-HQS and 2% sucrose and distilled water plus 150 mg/L 8-HQS and 2% sucrose could replace the commercial vase solution for Dendrobium Sonia ?Eia Sakul? and Dendrobium ?Burana Jade?, respectively.
