Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in India has joined The World Food Preservation Center (WFPC)® LLC, located at Shepherdstown, West Virginia, USA. The World Food Preservation Center® LLC is a consortium of fifteen “sister” universities located across the globe and ARO Volcani Center in Israel, to reduce postharvest food losses in developing countries and diminish world hunger. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed recently between TNAU and the World Food Preservation Center® LLC. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is a leading agrotechnology provider of India and its graduates are recognized throughout the world. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University had its genesis from establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India as early as 1868 which was later relocated at Coimbatore during 1906. TNAU offers thirteen undergraduate degree programs, thirty three Post graduate degree programs and twenty-six doctoral programs all over Tamil Nadu. TNAU has 32 research centers for agrotechnology development and 14 Farm Science Centers (KVKs) for outreach. Dr. S.Mohan, Dean (SPGS)i/c, who has developed innovative technologies for the postharvest preservation of grains/seeds of agricultural and horticultural crops was responsible for this collaboration with World Food Preservation Center® LLC. The World Food Preservation Center® LLC is a consortium of fifteen major research universities and a research institute (ARO Volcani Center, Israel) in six continents dedicated towards providing an advanced world-class postharvest education (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) to young students in developing countries and conducting research on much needed new postharvest technologies. Dr. Charles L. Wilson, former USDA scientist in post harvest pathology & Founder/Chairman & CEO of the World Food Preservation Center® LLC states, “Because of our rapidly exploding population, the world requires more food to feed this population and we see this association between TNAU along with our other collaborators and the World Food Preservation Center® LLC as addressing this crisis in a long term and sustainable way.” Dr. Wilson continues, “We are indeed fortunate to have TNAU joining the World Food Preservation Center® LLC in our effort to reduce the postharvest losses of food in developing countries and diminish world hunger. Their experience and knowledge will be extremely valuable to us as we move forward.”
