1-MCP delayes fruit ripening of cape gooseberry

The berries of cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L., Solanaceae family) with climacteric behavior are highly perishable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the application of ethylene and 1- methylcyclopropene on the postharvest behavior of gooseberry berries. The berries of cape gooseberry ecotype Colombia were harvested from a commercial production field in the municipality of Ventaquemada Boyac?, Colombia. A completely randomized design with the following 4 treatments was used: Ethylene (1000 mg L -1), 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, 10 mg L-1),

A completely randomized design with the following 4 treatments was used: Ethylene (1000 mg L -1), 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, 10 mg L-1), 1 -MCP + ethylene anda control without application. After being treated all the fruits were left at room temperature (20?C, 75% RH). The measurements of physicochemical parameters at 1, 6 and 11 days after harvest (DAH) were performed, measurement of volatile compounds was performed at 7 DAH. It was found that the application of 1-MCP delayed fruit ripening of gooseberries by generating decreased values in variables such as respiratory rate, skin color index, total carotenoids, firmness loss and titratable acidity, total soluble solids and volatile compounds, such as ethyl octanoate, ethyl butanoate, ethyl decanoate, and hexhyl dodecanoate. Meanwhile, the ethylene application accelerated these changes. The results suggest that some ripening processes of cape gooseberries may be associated with the presence of ethylene.
