Application of Smart-Fresh extended storage of two cultivars of plum by two weeks compared to the control

The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of post-harvest treatment with 1-MCP on shelf life of selected plum cultivars. Three late plum cultivars were evaluated in 2012-2013. ?Haganta?, ?President? and ?Tophit? cultivars were stored in two experimental variants of ULO (Ultra Low Oxygen) atmospheres with 2% of O2 and 1% of CO2 concentrations at a temperature of 1.5?C. Experimental fruits were treated with SmartFresh (1?MCP, 1-methylcyclopropene) for 24 h before storage.A diffuser was used for application. The aim of application was to block ethylene production. Control fruits were treated without SmartFresh. Qualitative characteristics of fruits were evaluated weekly during storage. The first evaluation of fruits was carried out one day after removing from storage, while the second evaluation was after seven days of shelf-life, where fruits were stored at 16?C. Fruits treated with SmartFresh had higher firmness, good overall quality and lower occurrence of internal damages in the first year of evaluation. Application of SmartFresh extended storage of fruits up to 70 days in cultivars ?Haganta?, ?Tophit? and ?President?. In the second year, the positive effect of SmartFresh treatment was most apparent in cultivar ?President? (storage length 70 days), followed by cultivar ?Tophit? (storage length 63 days). Application of Smart-Fresh extended storage of fruits by two weeks in both cultivars compared with untreated controls. ?Haganta? plums were harvested near the onset of harvest maturity, which reduced storability to only 35 days compared with 70 days in 2012. An important factor that can influence SmartFresh efficacy appears to be the proper choice of harvest time.
