Asparagus rootstock waste controls lettuce nematode

Poscosecha, postcosecha, postharvest, asparagus, enfermedades, nematode, lettuce, nematodo In previous studies, we showed that the incorporation of the waste rootstocks obtained from the forcing culture of asparagus can control root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus penetrans) during subsequent lettuce cultivation. In field plots that were naturally infested with P. penetrans, the incorporation of 5.5 kg/m2 of rootstocks lowered the P. penetrans density; however, the incorporation of 1.1 kg/m2 and 0.6 kg/m2 of rootstocks did not change this density. In order to prevent the transmission of soil diseases by directly incorporating the waste asparagus rootstocks, we measured the effects of a hot water extract of waste rootstocks on P. penetrans mortality. When applied to naturally infested soil in glass jars, the effects of the hot water extract on nematode density were similar to those of rootstocks. Extracts prepared from waste rootstocks in different conditions show almost similar effects.
